Become The In-Demand Category Of One Music Artist Who Makes The Competition Irrelevant
The Modern Musician’s Dilemma
Musicians often exhaust themselves by constantly chasing trends, posting on social media, and trying to “capture the algorithm.” Bree Noble captures this frustration perfectly: “We can exhaust ourselves trying to post, trying to come up with content plans, and always still feeling like we’re behind and we’re not capturing the algorithm and getting the bang for our buck of our time that we want to” .
But that’s just one part of the equation. When you consider the millions of artists on platforms like Spotify—and the influx of AI-generated content—it’s easy to feel like your artistry is getting drowned out. Even booking local gigs feels like an uphill battle: “All of the musicians in our area are going for the same gigs… they’re going to choose the younger artists, they’re going to choose the more flashy bands. And that can be very frustrating and demoralizing” .
The Category of One Concept
What if you could step out of the competition altogether? Bree Noble introduces the idea of building a “Category of One Artist” brand—an approach that positions you so uniquely that the competition simply becomes irrelevant.
“A category of one artist gives people something more memorable to remember them by than just being a singer-songwriter. The goal is not to convince everyone that you are the best artist in your genre. It is to help the right people understand who, why. There is no obvious substitute for what you do” .
This approach means embracing all facets of your experience, message, and worldview. Instead of pigeonholing yourself into a specific genre or endlessly explaining what kind of music you make, you define yourself on your own terms. “You just put yourself in a category of one. This is who I am and this is the music that I create,” says Bree Noble .
The Benefits of Standing Out
When you adopt the Category of One mindset:
- Communicating your brand and music becomes easier: Venues and organizations understand why they should book you.
- Creating authentic content feels natural: “Your marketing is a big cohesive idea that everything falls within, and that will just make it so much easier for you and so much more natural instead of feeling like you’re having to, like, pull teeth in order to promote something” .
- Your uniqueness shines: Your stories, life experiences, and perspectives become your superpower, fostering deeper connections with your audience.
The Secret Podcast Series
To help artists make this leap, Bree Noble created the “Category of One” secret podcast series—a five-episode, 75-minute binge-worthy collection that goes in-depth about how to build your own Category of One brand. “If this teaser episode has gotten you excited about this category of one concept… then I want to encourage you to jump into this secret podcast” .
The series is not on the main Profitable Musician Show feed, but available exclusively at ProfitableMusician.com/secret, where you can also discover an assessment to help clarify your next steps.
Why It Matters
In a world overflowing with competition and noise, shifting your perspective—and your brand—out of crowded genres and into a unique category of your own not only relieves the pressure, but also amplifies your impact as an artist. As Bree Noble points out, “creating your own pond where you’re the only fish in it and nobody else can compete with you” is the key to standing out—on your own terms.
