As the music industry landscape rapidly evolves, so do the ways artists are expected to connect, market, and grow their audiences. For women artists who are “of a certain age,” there’s a unique set of challenges—and advantages—that come with experience and maturity. In a recent episode, Bree Noble and Tara Brueske sit down to reflect on the realities of marketing as mature musicians, offering practical tips and much-needed encouragement for seasoned artists unsure about fitting in with youth-driven trends.

The Pressure to “Get With the Program”

Social media is awash with advice and ads promising explosive growth: do this, join that, post relentlessly. Bree Noble captures the mental tug-of-war many artists feel:

“There’s this pressure to do what’s popular, and sometimes that’s not right for us…maybe I need to get with the program and do what the young people are doing. Sometimes that’s true…And sometimes it’s like, uh, no, I don’t think that this fits me, my personality, and my music.”

Both Bree Noble and Tara Brueske urge mature artists to consider not just what’s popular but what’s right for them. If something feels out of step with your values or comfort, it’s okay to pass it by.

Social Media: Finding Your Place

It’s tempting to think you have to be everywhere—Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn. But where is your audience? As Tara Brueske notes,

“My audiences actually tend to be quite a bit older, so they’re actually going to mostly stay on Facebook, some on Instagram too. And again, I’ve got both. But I do think that, yeah, not, not feeling like— I mean, kind of recognizing, well, who is our audience? And they’re going to appreciate us for who we are, not for trying to be some on some young trend.”

If your fans are on Facebook, connect there with confidence! Don’t feel embarrassed or pressured to chase every trend or new platform.

Quality Over Quantity

The myth persists that only high-frequency posting works. But as Bree Noble shares,

“Don’t post a bunch of times just to post. Like, that won’t really help you. Like, one good post every day. That’s kind of the way I think about it… And then I’m not gonna stress about it the rest of the day because I’ve done my thing.”

Consistency and quality trump overwhelm. Avoid burnout by choosing a schedule and content style that feels sustainable and authentic.

Embrace What Makes You Unique

As mature artists, you carry a world of interests and life experiences that can add richness to your brand. Bree Noble points out,

“Bringing in other things of your life… You bake these special kinds of breads in your kitchen and you have a YouTube channel around that. Like, we should know about this… it’s super interesting, but a lot of people don’t think that. They’re like, well, that’s my other life or my other job, and they don’t think to integrate that.”

Your followers are interested in you—music and more. Sharing your passions, quirks, and stories deepens connections.

You Don’t Have To…

Feel pressure to dance, “be on” 24/7, or exhaust yourself with trends that don’t resonate. Bree Noble and Tara Brueske remind listeners: skip the things that aren’t a fit. Instead, series, life stories, and genuine engagement work wonders. Try, “voiceover” videos, authentic storytelling, or simply writing—whatever feels enjoyable and true to who you are.

Play the Long Game

Above all, longevity and consistency matter more than flash-in-the-pan virality. Tara Brueske and Bree Noble agree that older artists have the advantage of life experience and perspective:

“That’s where we have the advantage as older artists, because we’ve done things in our life that we, we did have to stick with it… we have that experience to know that we can’t just jump in and expect it to work right away.”

Stay the course. You bring a rich, unique voice to your work, and your audience will find you.

"I just finished listening to your 5 part series that you put out, and it's so good. I am working right now on marketing, booking, and music and not on the road until tomorrow LOL), and it just reaffirmed things again. Everyone needs to take a listen so it just kicks you in the butt to get your music out there.
