The Surprisingly Simple Game-Changer For Female Musicians

The Myth of the Big Break

Many musicians dream of serendipitous moments: meeting a famous producer, having a song go viral, landing a lucrative record deal out of nowhere. But as I shared in the podcast, “It wasn’t that I met some famous producer. It wasn’t that I had any big connections. It wasn’t that I wrote the most amazing song in the world, and it wasn’t that I did something on social media and went viral. It wasn’t any of those things that people often think, ‘Oh well, that’s what’s going to make my music career take off.’” What made the real difference was something both simple and powerful.

Community: The Game Changer

My trajectory changed when I found a community of musicians who understood what I was going through, who were a few steps ahead of me, and were generous with their knowledge and encouragement. “The biggest catalyst in my career was finding a community… to learn from, to be with, to really help nurture me as an artist, as a musician, as a performer, as a writer, as a business person on how to do this thing we call the music career.”

Here are the three ways that community transformed my career—and how it can do the same for you:

1. You’re Not Alone

Isolation is one of the most persistent obstacles for musicians, especially for indie artists. Even if you have supportive family and friends, “they didn’t live it.” A true community provides a place to belong, a reminder that others are on the same journey. For many, family might even doubt your pursuit: “Their family was constantly saying, ‘What are you thinking? This doesn’t make any sense. It’s not practical. Why don’t you go get a real job?’” But in the right community, you’ll find people who cheer you on and understand your dreams.

2. Shared Knowledge and Experience

Practical advice from those who have walked the path is invaluable. Whether it’s how to set up a merch table, negotiate pay with venues, or navigate the nuances of working with churches, having peers to turn to saves you time, stress, and missteps. As I put it: “You can cut your learning time so much by learning from other people and their experiences if they’re willing to share it.” A supportive community fosters an environment where information and strategies are shared freely, not hoarded out of fear or competition.

3. A Safe Space, Especially for Women

As a woman in music, I noticed another barrier: often I was surrounded by men, whether in bands or local music networks. While these were great musicians and supporters, I needed female role models and a safe, judgment-free zone to be candid about the unique challenges women face. “We have our own unique experiences as women and as performers… there’s just this safety in all being women.” That’s why creating the Female Musician Academy (now Female Musician Accelerator) was so important: to provide that essential space and community for women in music.

Moving Forward

Now, after 11 years, our community continues to thrive. Whether you’re a full-time artist, a parent balancing music with family, or a retiree reigniting your passion, there’s a place for you. If you feel isolated, unsupported, or unsure of the next steps in your music journey, remember: community might just be the missing catalyst you’ve been searching for.
