Transitioning From 9 to 5 To Full-Time Music Creator with Aurelie Couble

Embracing a Non-Traditional Path

Aurelie Couble didn’t come from a classical music background or attend music school. In fact, she described herself as someone who kept her love for music a “deep dark secret” until she was finally ready to go public. “I was like, you know those like, shower singers, as you call them?” 00:02:38 she joked.

After moving from France to Vancouver, Aurelie Couble found herself with more time and the freedom to pursue her musical ambitions. “I was a visual effects artist for movies… and I was at a spot where I was happy, so I didn’t have to work overtime. I had my weekends, so I had all of that free time. And that’s when I was like, you know what? I’m gonna go for it,” she recounted at 04:41.

Document, Don’t Create: The YouTube Approach

Inspired by Gary Vee’s philosophy of “document, don’t create,” Aurelie Couble launched her YouTube channel in 2021 as a way to chronicle her journey from absolute beginner to music producer. She made a conscious effort to share her learning process, including the awkward early videos. “I’ve never removed anything because I want people to see the evolution… people might watch our channels, watch us right now and be like, oh, but it looks so easy for you. You’re made to be on camera… No, I wasn’t,” she admitted at 13:00.

Her transparency and commitment to authenticity set her apart. “I decided I’m going to be that person that shows that side. So it’s like, hey, here’s where I’m at. Here’s what I learned. Here’s what it sounds like. Here’s what I’m struggling with as well,” Aurelie Couble shared at 15:41.

Combining Mindset, Music, and Business

From the beginning, Aurelie Couble brought together music production and self-development, deliberately mixing business insights into her educational content. “I don’t talk about self-development as in like, you know, a productivity kind of mindset. It’s more like, here’s how I bring self-development into music, into my own music journey,” she explained at 17:25.

As her channel grew, so did requests for guidance on YouTube growth, monetization, and social media for musicians. Soon, she was coaching other musicians, educators, and producers on how to leverage content to “get themselves clients or, you know, sell sample packs, digital products and just make a business out of their passion” 01:56.

Leaving the 9-to-5: The Smart Way

Many artists fear the leap to full-time entrepreneurship, but Aurelie Couble advocates for a gradual transition. She ran her YouTube and coaching business alongside her “9-to-5” for over two years, only quitting when her creative work was earning enough to cover half her living expenses. “If I do this full time, I can double that technically and make a full time income that I need. And so I just decided to bet on myself,” she recalled at 07:44.

She cautions against quitting your job prematurely: “When you’re afraid or… you feel unsafe and desperate, you’re just not going to take the right decisions and so you’re not going to build the right things for yourself” 08:58.

Finding High-Ticket Clients and Building Community

Far from the “starving artist” trope, Aurelie Couble helps musicians reposition themselves and find higher-paying opportunities. “There is an opportunity for people that don’t want to do gigs, touring or streaming… You can still make a living from your music passion from the comfort of your own bedroom,” she emphasized at 29:51.

For Aurelie Couble, content is the modern musician’s flyer or business card, attracting just the right clients. “You make content to attract the right client for you, depending on exactly who you want to serve. And then you have conversations with them because it’s a social media, so you have to be social,” she noted at 30:03.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a musician or creator looking to break out of old patterns, Aurelie Couble’s journey is proof that with authenticity, strategic thinking, and consistent action, you can build a business that reflects your strengths and supports your life.

"I just finished listening to your 5 part series that you put out, and it's so good. I am working right now on marketing, booking, and music and not on the road until tomorrow LOL), and it just reaffirmed things again. Everyone needs to take a listen so it just kicks you in the butt to get your music out there. I have been in the trenches a lot this summer, and sometimes the trench feels like it is going to cave in on you, and I needed this kick in the butt.
