A Journey Through the Music Business

Jesse Flores brings decades of industry experience to his role at Intercept Music. Sharing his story, he explained, “I started off my music career in college. I was able to secure a job as a part time college rep for Polygram Group Distribution back in the 90s…it was my senior year, so I had maybe a couple semesters left. But I was really stoked to get that job and kind of get my foot in the door as part of the…music business.” Climbing the ladder through roles at Polygram, Universal, and EMI, he eventually found his way to Intercept Music after enduring and surviving multiple industry mergers.

Throughout these transitions, what kept Jesse Flores inspired was witnessing the business side of music firsthand: “Being able to be a part of a big distributor like Polygram at the time was huge because I got to see, you know, really how the business side of the music game works.”

What Sets Intercept Music Apart

Unlike other distribution platforms, Intercept Music positions itself as a true partner. As Jesse Flores explained, “Intercept is like…the perfect blend of both [music and tech] as well as customer service. You know, I think that’s one thing that really separates us from other companies is the type of super service that we can provide the independent artists and label community. …We pretty much provide white glove service. You know, we really like to help grow our labels and, you know, take the career to the next level.”

Customer service is a foundational element, especially in a world where artists on larger DIY platforms often struggle to get meaningful support. Bree Noble observed, “If something goes wrong…they can’t get anyone to fix it for them. And so obviously, you guys are taking the other approach of being more customer service friendly.”

Modern Tools: AI and Service Offerings

Intercept Music embraces modern technology by incorporating AI tools directly into their dashboard. Jesse Flores described, “We definitely have incorporated AI within our dashboard so you don’t have to go to…a third party to access some of these tools. …if you need a bio or you need a press release for your new release, all that can be generated within a dashboard. …Same thing with social media messaging and posting.” This one-stop shop mentality enables independent artists to operate more efficiently and professionally from day one.

The platform also offers “a la carte” services to match the unique needs of each artist, whether it’s a YouTube audit, help with DSP optimization, or direct access to industry experts. This flexibility is key for self-managed artists who don’t have full professional teams.

Rising Above the Noise: Advice for Artists

With tens of thousands of new songs uploaded daily, cutting through the digital clutter is the major challenge. Jesse Flores stresses the importance of having a clear vision and planning every release. “You need to have a really strong brand and build a unique story or sound, something that’ll…separate you and be different than everybody else.” He also encourages building “the Fantastic Five”—a robust team that supports every business and creative aspect so artists can stay focused and consistent.

He urges patience and resilience for new artists: “The music industry is super competitive and it just doesn’t happen overnight for anyone. For most people…Once you do start releasing music, make sure that all your metadata is up to date and correct, because you don’t want to leave any money on the table.”

Building a Lasting Career

Ultimately, Jesse Flores advocates that live performance is essential: “Touring…is essential and it’s the lifeline of a music artist career.” While technology offers new pathways, nothing beats the connection made in person.

For those just starting out in 2025 and beyond, the takeaways are clear: combine timeless craft with business acumen, leverage quality distribution and tech tools, build a trusted support team, and stay persistent.
